Taima Mandala, Japan, 1750
The Buddha Amida sits at the center of the Taima Mandala, in a palace with a golden pond. Dancers and musicians surround him. Amida is the central figure in Pure Land Buddhism. Those being born into the Pure Land emerge from lotus buds growing up through the water of the pond, as shown in the foreground of this 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle.
